Encourage Facebook Comments: Use Facebook Notes

Status updates are a great way to let your friends know the latest news and share your outlook on the world, but they don’t always encourage Facebook comments. The bad thing about these updates is that they limit you to 460 characters, making it difficult if you have a lot of information to share, acting almost like the equivalent of Facebook to Twitter.

Facebook offers another option for those who like to say a little bit more; the note. With this useful function, you can use FB like a blog, sharing your latest news, political views, creative writing, or thoughts, and notes can be as along or as short as you need, from a snappy opinion piece to a short story.

For example, many people like to add creative pieces to a note and ask for feedback in the Facebook comments section, or create an op-ed that starts a robust political debate. The note will be posted to your FB friends’ newsfeeds, and they are free to read and add comments and likes.

How To Use Facebook Notes

  1. Go to your profile by clicking the link in the top right hand corner of the page
  2. Underneath your profile picture is a link marked ‘Notes.’ Click it
  3. This will bring you to a page with all of your notes in one place
  4. At the top right of the page is a button called ‘Write a Note.’
  5. This brings up a blank note, structured like a blog post
  6. Write a title for your note
  7. Write your note in the box marked ‘Body.’ You can use the buttons at the top to write bold, italic, and underlined text, as well as include bullet points, numbered lists, and quotes.
  8. You can add Facebook tags to your notes, such as ‘Personal,’ ‘Politics’ or ‘Business,’ which will help you to keep track as the number of notes increases
  9. You can also add a photo to your note to make it more interesting. Click the ‘Add a Photo’ link and upload a file from your hard drive or use a photo from one of your Facebook albums
  10. You can change the security settings, deciding who can actually see the note: everyone, friends, friends of friends, or the customize option, where you can choose to share with certain people or prevent certain people from viewing it.
  11. Click preview to check that your note looks perfect
  12. You can either ‘Save Draft’ and come back to the note another time, discard the note, or click ‘Publish’ to share it with the world.
  13. If you save a draft, you can make changes at any time by clicking the ‘Edit’ below the ‘Publish’ button on your notes screen.
